If you have IBD, your blood donation can make a crucial impact in helping researchers study and develop better treatments for this chronic condition.
Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) causes inflammation in the digestive tract, leading to symptoms such as abdominal pain, severe diarrhea, fatigue, weight loss, and malnutrition. The inflammation can affect different areas of the digestive tract in various individuals and often extends into deeper layers of the bowel.
While there is no known cure for IBD, therapies can significantly reduce symptoms and even bring long-term remission and healing. Many people with IBD can manage their condition effectively with proper treatment.
How Your Blood Donation Can Help
Your white blood cells can provide valuable insights for scientists working on treatments for IBD. Leukapheresis, a process where white blood cells are separated from other blood components, is a key method for advancing research. By donating, you can contribute to studies that may lead to breakthroughs in diagnosing, treating, and preventing IBD.
Donors are compensated for their time and contribution.
Donor requirements for participation:
- You must be clinically diagnosed with Inflammatory Bowel Disease by a medical professional.
- Confirmation of the diagnosis and/or treatment must be verified with your physician.
- Be pre-screened to determine eligibility.
- You’re willing to donate white blood cells via the leukapheresis process.
- You must have a photo ID.
- You must be at least 18 years old.
- You must weigh at least 60kg.
White blood cells help defend the body against disease and infection. The process of leukapheresis removes white blood cells and returns other blood components back to the donor. A white blood cell donation can assist scientists in the effort to diagnose, treat and prevent diseases.
Your immune cell donation may assist researchers to advance medical treatments, lead to a scientific breakthrough or even develop cures for certain diseases or disorders. Immunologists worldwide have a need for healthy immune cells and cellular subsets, and this is where you come in!
Be sure to review eligibility details in order to be prepared to donate.
Clinical Trials Laboratory Services (CTLS) supplies the scientific community with human biologicals collected at our own IRB-approved donor centre in compliance with HTA UK regulations. Products include blood and sera, as well as white blood cells, red blood cells and various other human samples.
